Communication Shutdown at Morton’s The Steakhouse

0

For many of us, a day without social media is simply unthinkable. But what if not being able to communicate was a reality? On Monday, November 1, Facebook and Twitter users around the world can participate in a one-day voluntary shutdown to raise awareness and money for autism.

The “social” experiment is called “Communication Shutdown” and its challenge to social network users is: “Can you get by without Facebook or Twitter, for just one day?” It’s simple: Supporters log on to communicationshutdown.org and donate $5 or more to receive a charity app (CHAPP) that connects with their Facebook or Twitter accounts. On Communication Shutdown Day, the CHAPP will post an automatic message that goes out to the user’s contacts and displays a ‘shutdown badge’ on social media profile pictures, signifying the user has chosen to voluntarily forgo social media for the day to stand in solidarity with those living with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Morton’s The Steakhouse is underwriting an invitation-only luncheon for Communication Shutdown supporters on Monday in Naperville. Monies raised will go to support Giant Steps, an autism specialty school located in Lisle, Illinois. In our commitment to Communications Shutdown, Morton’s will suspend communication on its social networks, Facebook and Twitter.

Autism is a developmental disorder that affects verbal and nonverbal communication. Some people with autism do not speak at all; those at the higher-functioning end of the spectrum may talk a lot but not follow the give-and-take of social interaction. 1 in 110 children born today will be affected by autism.

Let’s help spread awareness on autism by remaining silent – not social – on November 1.

September 2 is #Cabernet Day!

1

Instead of focusing on a specific wine this week, we’re instead highlighting a popular red wine grape! So raise your glass and toast #Cabernet Day with us!

Cabernet is one of the most popular and celebrated grapes in the world. The idea behind #Cabernet Day is to use Social Media and make it possible for anyone to follow or contribute to the conversation by including the hashtag #Cabernet in their posts on Twitter, Facebook,, personal blogs, etc,. If you participate in #Cabernet Day, you’re encouraged to sample Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Blend and/or Cabernet Franc and engage with others doing the same with conversation, tasting notes, and suggestions.

Better yet, enjoy a glass of Cabernet at a Morton’s near you! We’re serving BV, “Coastal Estates,” Cabernet Sauvignon as a featured wine during Power Hour at select locations, and it will pair perfectly with Petite Filet Mignon Sandwiches, part of our $6 or $7 Bar Bites menu. (Check your local Morton’s for pricing and availability.) We’re also proud to offer St. Supery, “Elu,” Cabernet Blend, Sequoia Grove, Cabernet Sauvignon (in select markets) and Hidden Ridge, “55% Slope,” Cabernet Sauvignon on our Wine by the Glass list! Sit back, relax and tweet your heart out as you experience #Cabernet Day in the comfort of Morton’s bar or dining room.

Enjoy the conversation on Thursday September 2, 2010 at any time during the day (it’s a 24-hour discussion so that anyone in any time zone can join in). Use the #Cabernet hashtag to make it easier for people to find you and see what you’re saying or search the #Cabernet hashtag in google, Twitter or Facebook.

Our thanks to Rick Bakas from St. Supery Vineyards and Winery for organizing this event and inviting Morton’s to participate.

Social Media

Morton’s The Steakhouse is heavily involved in Social Networking, especially on Twitter and Facebook. We have hosted some Morton’s bar events throughout the country, tweet ups we’ve called them, which we’ve exclusively promoted through Social Media, and they’ve been very successful. We are also highly focused on our e-communications and targeted messaging to our Morton’s guests and followers around the country, who love receiving information about an upcoming promotion or one of our Prime Events at Morton’s series. Here is a recent article that appeared online, whose basic premise is that Email and Social Media con co-exist in the business model. At Morton’s we happen to agree! We hope you enjoy the article.

Steakhouse Pioneer also Social Media Pioneer

0

No one can deny Morton’s is a true pioneer among the fine dining restaurants and steakhouses across the world. We set the bar and have been doing so for over 30 years. It should be no surprise then that Morton’s is also raising the bar when it comes to social media. Recognizing the significance of this “new” media years ago, Morton’s has grown a strong presence on social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn.

Chain Leader took some time to sit down with Morton’s SVP of marketing and communications, Roger Drake, to learn more about how Morton’s has tapped into this new social media frontier.

Says Drake: “We were certainly the first high-end steakhouse company to dive in to social media. We started two-and-a-half years ago. One thing we do well is listen to guests. It’s important for us to hear what they are saying. Social media is a further extension of listening–then getting involved in the conversation and using it to get your message out.”

Read more about Morton’s presence on social media and be sure to check out Morton’s on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn.

Morton’s Hosts Long Island Social Media Event

0

The IABC Long Island Chapter hosted a November business luncheon at Morton’s The Steakhouse in Great Neck, and featured dynamic speaker Juliette Powell, social media guru and author of 33 Million People in the Room, How to Create, Influence and Run a Successful Business with Social Networking.

Juliette is co-founder of The Gathering Think Tank Inc. which provides a forum for innovation, research and development. So, going into this presentation the audience wonders, Social Networking experts? Is anyone really an expert in this new medium? Well, Juliette certainly knows her way around social networking and how to create business success with it. She really talked about social networking as adding value to each others’ lives. She introduced some excellent case studies, including one from UCLA that focuses on the Center of the Universe Theory, with Social Capital and Cultural Capital playing pivotal roles in developing a key network of people engaging in the conversation.

The book’s aforementioned name? It refers to 2 to the power of 2 equaling four, and two to the power of 25 equalling 33 million, so exponentially we can have an incredible amount of followers in our own social networks. A significant return on your investment means you only need to dedicate time and authentic-ness and a genuine contribution of your ideas and thoughts. How do you build a strong social network? Engage in topics you are genuinely passionate about, and maybe it’s not your job. It could be an intense interest in cooking, or a sports team.

Juliette talked about experts such as Gary Vaynerchuk, who grew up learning about tasting wine without actually ever tasting it; instead he tasted the rocks and the dirt that the grapes grew in, and has since developed such a huge following. But Gary talks about sports, the New York Jets, as much as he does about wine. He now does a weekly video blog that has incredible social networking exposure, and he’s recently signed a 10-book deal. So much more that Juliette brought to light for this audience, but it’s really all about engaging in topics that interest you. She suggested each of us start a blog on such a topic. Social networking is really all about a pull of information rather than a push of information.

RECIPES FOR FEEDING AMERICA: Morton’s of Great Neck held a business luncheon for 35 communications professionals of Long Island, hosted by the
International Association of Business Communicators, Long Island chapter, on November 17th. Each of the guests brought canned food and individually packaged cereals, as did the employees of Great Neck Morton’s. All items will be donated to our local food bank, Long Island Cares, Inc., who are aligned with Morton’s national charitable partner, Feeding America. Morton’s has raised over $140,000 to date for local food banks across the US in conjunction with Feeding America.
